Raw Feeding for Pets: Everything You Need to Know in Our FAQ Guide

Understanding Species Appropriate diets for pets FAQS

Raw feeding vs Kibble | EvoLove Store

Every pet owner wants to feed their pet the best food possible. The problem is understanding what is truly healthy vs marketing hype.

The pet food industry (similar to the human food industry) has sacrificed our pets’ health and sold us on fast, cheap and convenient highly processed frankenfood.

Fortunately, pet parents are waking up and are connecting the rising rates of illness and dis-ease to the foods they are feeding their fur babies. To meet consumer demand, there has been a growing number of “fresh food” and “raw food” companies entering the marketplace. But all fresh and raw food are not “healthy”. The problem now is how to decipher what is truly healthy food.

This article explores the scientific basis for species-appropriate diets, detailing their benefits, and addressing common misconceptions.

What is a species appropriate diet?

A species appropriate balanced raw food diet should mimic as closely as possible how that animal would have eaten in the wild, before mankind’s intervention. Dogs are scavenger carnivores. Cats are obligate carnivores, having no dietary requirements for carbohydrates.  In the wild, these animals ate a balance of meat, fat, bone and organ meat. They also ate fur (insoluble fiber), and some intestinal ingesta (rich in pre and probiotics). And the prey they ate was feeding on their natural diet, not corn or GMO soy feeds.

No species-appropriate dog or cat food should contain corn!

Scientific evidence on species appropriate diets

Improved Digestive Health:

  • Research Evidence: Studies published in the Journal of Animal Science reveal that dogs and cats have digestive systems optimized for a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, which aligns with their natural diet as carnivores.

  • Real-World Results: Pet owners who transition to species-appropriate diets often report improvements such as firmer stools, fewer digestive issues and less skin allergies.

Enhanced Nutrient Absorption:

  • Bioavailability of Nutrients: Raw diets provide nutrients in their most natural form, enhancing absorption and utilization. Research in the British Journal of Nutrition demonstrates that dogs on raw diets have elevated levels of essential nutrients compared to those on processed foods.

  • Minimal Processing: Raw diets avoid the high temperatures and extensive processing that can degrade essential vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Commercial pet foods often use synthetic vitamins to meet food labeling requirements.

Weight Management and Obesity Prevention:

  • Metabolic Benefits: According to the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets support lean muscle mass and help control fat accumulation in pets.

  • Controlled Feeding: Raw food allows for precise portion control and nutrient density, reducing the risk of overfeeding and obesity.

Dental Health:

  • Reduced Periodontal Disease: A study in Veterinary Dentistry and Oromaxillofacial Surgery found that dogs on raw diets had less plaque and tartar compared to those on commercial diets.  This is likely related to the reduced carbohydrates (sugars) in raw diets. In contrast, animals on kibble diets had advanced periodontal disease as early as 4 years of age.

Overall Well-Being:

  • Energy Levels: Many pet owners observe increased energy and vitality in their raw fed pets.

  • Coat Condition: Reduction or resolution of skin allergies (dandruff, seborrhea, ear infections and itching) are observed in a short period of time after converting to a raw diet. These benefits are attributed to biological high-quality proteins, essential fatty acids and removal of excess carbohydrates (sugar). Sugars are inflammatory, just like in people.

  • Behavioral Improvements: Species appropriate nutrition can also positively influence behavior. The Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science suggests that diet affects pets’ behavior and overall well-being.

Controversies

The controversy around raw feeding is largely fueled by misconceptions and misinformation. The pet food industry, a multi-trillion dollar sector dominated by large companies, has popularized fast, cheap, convenient AND specialty prescription pet foods. Many people are aware of the health issues caused by processed foods in humans, and there are similar concerns for pets consuming processed foods.

Misbeliefs:

A common argument against raw food is the risk of contamination with pathogenic bacteria like E. coli, salmonella, and listeria. This risk exists if the meat is mishandled. However, many raw food companies, including my own, EvoLove Raw, produce their products in USDA-inspected facilities. All meat leaving these facilities is tested and proven pathogen-free. With proper food handling and hygiene, these products are safer than many commercial processed foods, as evidenced by numerous recalls on processed foods.

ScienceDirect article on pet food recalls and Dog Food Advisor’s list of recalls.

The fact is, an increasing number of pet owners are feeding raw diets, and there are no widespread reports of illness from balanced, grass-fed, and grass-finished raw diets. Research from the University of Helsinki College of Veterinary Medicine showed significant declines in inflammatory markers in animals fed raw diets compared to those fed kibble. Other studies have found that 85% of dogs on kibble diets were deficient in Vitamin D.

Its important to remember! Not all raw food companies are equal! Many raw food companies have entered the market to capitalize on the trend, but they use cheap unhealthy ingredients.

Is a raw diet more expensive?

Pet parents are under the illusion that feeding a kibble diet is cheaper than a raw diet. Though it may have that appearance early on, this is an illusion as the cost of medical care that results from feeding processed food which causes inflammation and dis-ease far exceeds the perceived savings. When we include the emotional anguish of watching our pets suffer from preventable dis-ease, there is no choice but to choose a healthier diet.

Can I make my own raw food?

Yes you can!  The problem comes in when owners are unable to source the needed ingredients.  When this happens often the diet can become imbalanced, leading to nutritional imbalances.

Familiarity and Training: Veterinarians receive little training in nutrition. The big box companies like Hills and Purina subsidize the education which is focused on prescription diets to solve dis-ease like diabetes and gastrointestinal issues. Sadly, they never address the root cause of the dis-ease, which is the highly processed diets!

Convenience and Shelf Life: Kibble is easy to store, measure, and serve. Its long shelf life and stability make it a practical option for many pet owners. Freeze-dried raw food is a sustainable alternative to kibble. It has a long shelf life and does not require refrigeration making it convenient for pet parents that have little freezer space or that travel.

Cost Considerations: Kibble is perceived as more affordable compared to raw or freeze-dried diets, which can be a significant factor for many pet owners. However, this is not true when comparing the cost of medical care that results from feeding inflammatory diets.

Established Practices: Many veterinarians follow established practices and recommendations widely accepted and promoted in the industry. The current trend for declining health and reduction in longevity shows a clear need to change the old belief systems (BS) and adopt feeding practices that promote health and longevity.

Health Concerns: Some vets may have concerns about the risks associated with raw diets, such as potential bacterial contamination or nutritional imbalances, particularly if the raw diet is not properly balanced or prepared. However reputable companies such as EvoLove have created safe and balanced diets for pets.

Species-appropriate raw diets have been successful in nature since the beginning of recorded time. The University Of Helsinki was the first veterinary college to perform studies that proved feeding a species appropriate raw diet lowered inflammatory markers.

More FAQS on Species Appropriate Diets:

Pets need nutrient rich species appropriate diets

In the wild, pets would consume diets that mirror their natural habitats. To optimize their health, it’s crucial to feed them species-appropriate diets, mimicking what they would have eaten in their natural environment.

By choosing EvoLove Raw, you’re not just providing a meal – you’re nourishing your pets with a tailored, nutrient-rich species appropriate diet that aligns with their evolutionary needs. We assure that each pet’s nutritional needs are met with the highest quality, bioavailable natural ingredients. To achieve this, we’ve innovatively separated macronutrients (meat, fat, bone, and organ meat) from micronutrients (essential vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids).

Essential nutrients, vital for proper body function, are often lacking in today’s diets. EvoLove Raw addresses this by allowing pet owners to assemble a truly species-appropriate diet with the highest possible nutrient value at home. Owners can now ensure their pets receive the proper nutrient dose for their weight and metabolic needs.

Transitioning dogs to a raw diet is different than transitioning cats to a raw diet. Please see below for the species specific recommendations. NOTE! If you are experiencing difficulty transitioning your pet to a raw diet there may be underlying health challenges that need to be addressed through proper diagnostics, restoring gut health and supporting detoxification. The information in the Empowered Pet Parent Course will teach you what you need to address these issues. Take the course click here.

Transitioning a pet to a raw food diet requires a gradual approach to help their digestive system adapt.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Research and Plan:

1. Educate yourself about the principles of raw feeding and the nutritional needs of dogs.

2. Plan the transition and if your pet has any pre-existing conditions consult your vet

Start with Small Amounts:

1. Begin by replacing a small portion of your dog’s current diet with raw food. This could be as little as 5-10% of their total daily intake but not more than 20% new food.

2. Gradually increase the ratio of raw food over the old diet over a period of 7-10 days.

3. Watch for any signs of digestive issues, allergies, or sensitivities during the transition. If your dog experiences diarrhea or other issues, slow down the transition process.

Adjust Portion Sizes:

1. Adjust the portion sizes based on your dog’s weight, age, and activity level.

2. Monitor your dog’s weight and condition to ensure they are receiving adequate nutrition.

3. Observe for positive changes in your dog’s health, including improved coat condition, energy levels, and dental health.

Consider Supplements:

1. Depending on your dog’s specific needs, consider adding supplements like EvoLove Magic Mushrooms (8 therapeutic mushrooms for maximum immune support) or Joyful Joints to enhance joint health.

Remember, every dog is unique, and the transition period may vary. Be patient and attentive to your dog’s needs, and consult with your veterinarian if you have any concerns or questions during the process.

Let me know! I want to hear your feedback and would love to see your dogs transformation.

No, to derive the maximum benefit of a raw diet, we want to preserve the living enzymes in raw meat that aid in the digestive process. However food should be fed at room or body temperature for best digestion. Food can be warmed by placing it in a glass container and setting the container over hot water or by adding hot bone broth to warm the food and enhance gut healing.

Keep the patties frozen and create a thawing rotation. Put the amount of food you will need for 3-4 days in a glass container in the refrigerator to thaw. EvoLove will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 8 days.

Always use good hygiene and safe food handling practices when dealing with raw meat.

Yes. Many people like to food prep portions and re-freeze. DO NOT add the supplements when food prepping and re-freezing.

I prefer to use glass as plastics can leach into the food and plastic is not environmentally friendly.

Label each container or bag with the date of freezing. This helps you keep track of the storage duration and ensures that you use the oldest batches first.

Thaw frozen EvoLove Raw pet food in the refrigerator. Avoid leaving the food at room temperature for an extended period to prevent bacterial growth.

Practice good hygiene when handling frozen or thawed raw pet food. Wash hands, utensils, and surfaces thoroughly to avoid cross-contamination.

Freezing is an effective way to store raw pet food, preserving its nutritional content and minimizing the risk of spoilage. Always prioritize safe food handling practices to ensure the health and well-being of your pets.

A rough calculation for adult dogs and cats is 1.5 ounces of 85/15 per 5 pounds of body weight (this is a total volume for the day and can be divided into two meals).

For growing puppies and kittens, feed double that (3 ounces of 85/15 per 5 pounds of body weight), divided into 3-4 meals a day. As puppies and kittens mature, they will be weaned down to the adult feeding of 1.5oz/5 pounds body weight daily (can be divided into two meals).

If the pet is losing weight (and that is not desired), increase the amount being fed. If the pet is gaining weight (and that is not desired), decrease the amount being fed.  If weight loss is desired, calculate the amount to feed based on 10 pounds less than the pet’s actual weight.  Once weight loss is achieved, re-calculate and adjust the volume accordingly.

The quantity of food to feed a pet depends on various factors, including the pet’s species, age, weight, activity level and current health condition. Take the amount of food in ounces that they eat in a day and multiply this number by 30 days = the ounces per month. Take the number of ounces and divide by 16 (there are 16 ounces in 1 pound) to equal the pounds needed for one month.

Consider the amount of freezer space that you have before making a purchase

More FAQS:

How should I introduce a new supplement to my pet?

Start by researching and selecting the right supplement for your pet’s specific needs. Introduce one supplement at a time to monitor for any adverse reactions. Once you confirm that the supplement is well-tolerated, you can consider adding another if necessary.

All capsules can either:

Be opened and mixed in the a treat if the pet tolerates it or

be dissolved with liquid supplements in a separate bowl and be syringed in the pets mouth.

You should give capsules as part of a treat so your pets views this with excitement. This can be done by placing the capsule in a meatball, then giving your pet a meatball without the capsule and then giving your pet the meatball with the capsule in it. This can also be done as a play activity where you stimulate their prey instincts such as giving the capsule in a treat during play time.

Try and give this before meal time so your pet is hungry (prey activities will stimulate instinct which should stimulate hunger).

What are your recommendations to start my pet's supplement journey??

Starting your pet on a supplement regimen can be a proactive step towards enhancing their overall health and well-being. Here are some recommendations to consider:

  1. Vital Vitamins and Minerals: Ensure your pet’s diet includes essential vitamins and minerals that support their immune system, bone health, and overall vitality. Supplements can fill in nutritional gaps that may be lacking in their regular diet. Recommended supplement is EvoLove Vital Vitamins and Minerals (click here)
  2. Fatty Acids: Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are crucial for maintaining healthy skin and coat, supporting joint function, and promoting cognitive health. Look for supplements rich in sources like fish oil or flaxseed oil to provide these essential nutrients. Recommended supplement is EvoLove Fatty Acids.
  3. Amazing Aminos: Amino acids play a vital role in muscle development, immune function, and tissue repair. Supplements containing amino acids such as taurine, lysine, and arginine can benefit your pet’s overall health, especially for cats and dogs with specific dietary needs. Recommended supplement is EvoLove Amazing Aminos.

When starting your pet on supplements, it’s essential to address their overall dietary needs. A species appropriate raw food diet is recommended. This should be grass fed and grass finished raw meat alongside a organic probiotic such as Kefir or organic sauerkraut.

What can I use for probiotics?

Studies have revealed that fermented foods such as organic sauerkraut and Kefir can enhance the gut microbiome, leading to better health and increased lifespan for your pet. A probiotic alternative to kefir is organic sauerkraut juice (the veggies are safe to give but may give the animal gas)

Don’t use Kefir and broth at the same time in one bowl

To make your own Kefir click here! Remember not all Kefir sold in store is Kefir!

My pet is a picky eater. How can I get them to take a supplement?

It is also important to NOT put supplements directly into their food! Some animals especially cats are sensitive to changes and can smell subtle additions to their foods, you do not want to put them off their food by adding a supplement to it. If you have a tried and tested treat that you know your pet loves add the supplement to this.

Stimulate Hunger Drive: Mimic prey activity with interactive games at dawn and dusk to enhance digestion and appetite.

Encourage natural instincts like pouncing and provide essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals.

Maintain Instincts: For kittens keep their instincts active through play to stimulate appetite and engagement.

Ensure Nutritional Balance: Provide necessary vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and fermented foods as a baseline.

Consider Digestive Enzymes: Supplement processed food with digestive enzymes separately to ensure consumption.

Experiment with Treats: Offer healthy treats like paté or organic liverwurst to entice appetite, incorporating vitamins gradually.

Temporary Solutions: In some cases, make a slurry of food and administer with a syringe temporarily to encourage consumption.

Do pets need supplements if they are fed a raw food diet?

Did you know nutrient deficiencies are affecting nearly 50% of the human population and nearly 85% of the pet population?

Essential nutrients are defined as those nutrients that the body can not make in sufficient quantities on its own. We must get the essential vitamins, minerals, fatty, acids, and amino acids from our diet. The same is true for our pets.

Nutrient deficiencies begin in the soil due to non-regenerative farming practices. If the soil doesn’t have the micronutrients, the plants growing in the soil will be deficient resulting in the individuals consuming the plants being nutrient deficient.

A key factor in all dis-ease stems from a deficiency of essential nutrients, an excess of toxins, and most often it is a combination of these.

Most of my clients agree that the old model of symptom suppression is not working. If the root cause of the problem is not fixed, the result is often relapses, chronic conditions or worse diseases.

Could the answer to many health challenges be as simple as healthy eating and correct supplementation? In most cases, ABSOLUTELY!  As I sought for solutions, I learned that the nutraceutical industry is like the wild wild west. It is extremely difficult to know the quality of the products being manufactured. I spent four years trying to find a company that would produce the products I needed for my fur patients with the quality standards I demanded. It’s been a journey of passion, research, and unwavering commitment to quality, but I succeeded in producing a product line that is not only safe and effective, but is human grade (pet parents could take the same supplement and derive the same benefits)!

Treating Cellular Dysfunction?

When considering supplements for a pet with cellular dysfunction, it’s crucial to approach treatment under the guidance and supervision of a veterinarian. B17 can help with cellular dysfunction, here’s an overview:

  1. B17 (Laetrile/Amygdalin): B17, commonly known as Laetrile or Amygdalin, is derived from apricot pits, bitter almonds, and other fruit seeds. It has been promoted in alternative medicine circles for its potential anti-c#ncer properties. The theory behind its use revolves around its metabolite, cyanide, which proponents believe can selectively target and destroy c#ncer cells.
How do I assess supplement quality?

Research the manufacturer and ask questions about the product. Reputable companies should provide clear, detailed information about their supplements. If a company is evasive, consider looking for alternatives.

Can dogs and cats use the same supplements?

Some supplements are formulated for both cats and dogs, but many are specific to one species. Always check the label and use species-appropriate products.

How should I store supplements?

Store supplements in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and heat. High shelves or secure cupboards are ideal to prevent accidental ingestion by pets or children.

How long do supplements last?

Refer to the serving guidelines on the packaging, which vary by supplement type. Once opened, use supplements within six months and store them properly to maintain freshness.

Why do pets need Fatty Acids?

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) constitute a cornerstone of cellular health, playing pivotal roles in various physiological processes. EvoLove’s Essential Oils present a unique, patented formula, meticulously engineered to deliver the ideal balance of “parent” omega-6 (LA) and “parent” omega-3 (ALA). These foundational fatty acids, comprising 30%-40% of cell wall membranes, serve as precursors for essential metabolic functions, ensuring optimal cellular function and vitality. How do I switch my pets to a new supplement?

Gradually introduce the new supplement by mixing it with the current one over several days to avoid digestive upset. Monitor your pet for any adverse reactions during the transition.

How long should my pet take supplements?

The duration of supplementation depends on the specific supplement and your pet’s health needs. Some supplements may be used for short-term support, while others can be part of long-term health maintenance. Discuss with your veterinarian for personalized recommendations.

What are digestive enzymes for?

Digestive enzymes are natural substances that help break down food into nutrients that can be absorbed by the body. They play a crucial role in ensuring efficient digestion and nutrient absorption. Pets, like humans, may benefit from digestive enzyme supplements, especially if their diet lacks these enzymes naturally found in raw or minimally processed foods.

Why are amino acids important?

Essential amino acids are crucial nutrients that pets need for various biological functions such as growth, tissue repair, and overall health. Unlike non-essential amino acids, which the body can produce, essential amino acids must be obtained through the diet. Many pets today may not get enough of these vital nutrients due to dietary deficiencies, which can lead to health issues. EvoLove Amazing Aminos provides a concentrated source of essential amino acids to help bridge this nutritional gap and support your pet’s well-being. Click here for EvoLove Amazing Aminos!
