Glyphosate, the active ingredient in herbicides like Roundup, became widely used in agriculture as a weed control.
Originally patented in 1961 by Stauffer Chemical Co. as a descaling agent and antibiotic, glyphosate was later re-patented by Monsanto in 1974 as the active ingredient in its now-infamous herbicide, Roundup.
Monsanto, who held the patent on Roundup and Roundup Ready Crops, sold farmers on the idea that they could achieve good weed control while not harming Monsanto’s “Roundup Ready” crops. It sounded too good to be true, weed control that didn’t harm the plants and increased yield. It turns out, crop yields did not improve and the damage to people, animals and the planet are exceeding everyone’s worst expectations.
Glyphosate containing weed killers were then marketed to the public and used in public parks, backyards, and even schoolyards for weed control. While it was marketed as safe and effective, mounting scientific evidence has proven otherwise.
Because Glyphosate is water-soluble, it has contaminated groundwater, drinking water, and the rain water. Along the Mississippi River, which drains vast agricultural lands, there is a notably high rate of cancers. This is linked to the river collecting runoff containing glyphosate and other agricultural chemicals from these heavily farmed regions, contributing to environmental pollution and health risks.
Glyphosate is now so pervasive that traces have been found in over 75% of processed foods, breast milk of humans and umbilical cord blood of humans. Pet exposure is worse, with nearly every pet tested (by independent labs) having detectable levels of glyphosate.
Glyphosate has been conclusively linked to cancer, hormonal disruption, liver and kidney damage, and microbiome destruction. In 2018, Bayer acquired Monsanto and inherited thousands of lawsuits alleging Roundup causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Courts have awarded billions in damages, prompting Bayer to set aside over $10 billion for settlements.
Bayer’s has subsequently created a new herbicide, Liberty, containing glufosinate). Some experts argue glufosinate is more toxic than glyphosate, with studies linking it to neurotoxicity, reproductive harm, and long-lasting environmental effects. While not yet as widely scrutinized in the media, emerging research is raising red flags about the safety of this chemical, both for human health and ecosystems.
- Because Glyphosate acts as a broad-spectrum antibiotic, it kills beneficial gut bacteria and disrupts the entire microbiome.
- Healthy microbes play a crucial role in maintaining intestinal lining integrity, digesting food, synthesizing vitamins, and protecting against harmful pathogens.
- Glyphosate melts the actin filaments that hold the tight junctions together leading to “Leaky gut” also referred to as increased intestinal permeability. When the gut barrier weakens, toxins and partially digested food particles can leak into the bloodstream, triggering systemic inflammation and immune dysfunction. This “leaky gut” state has been linked to a wide array of chronic diseases, including autoimmune conditions, allergies, metabolic disorders, and even neurological problems. Click Here for more
- When the gut barrier breaks down, foreign material enters the body triggering chronic systemic inflammation. Click Here for more
- Glyphosate disrupts the production of key enzymes involved in amino acid synthesis, which affects not only microbial health but also the host’s metabolism and detoxification pathways.
- Poorly absorbed nutrients are a consequence to poor gut health.
- Skin allergies, ear infections and itchy pets are among the most common causes for veterinary visits. Click Here for more
- The cumulative effect is that glyphosate exposure weakens the gut’s ability to maintain immune tolerance and overall homeostasis.
- Damages Mitochondria: The mitochondria, the energy factories of the cells, are negatively impacted by environmental toxins like glyphosate. They no longer make adequate energy and their ability to communicate with the microbiome is compromised
- Fatigue and weakness results from mitochondrial dysfunction and poor nutrient absorption.
In the study, rats exposed to glyphosate from prenatal life developed aggressive cancers, leukemia, liver, kidney, ovarian, mammary, and nervous system tumors, many within the first year of life.
The most disturbing part? These cancers occurred at low doses equivalent to what pets might ingest through food or environmental contact.
Disrupts Detoxification Pathways. Glyphosate impairs the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, which is essential for detoxifying chemicals, metabolizing drugs, and producing key hormones like vitamin D and melatonin. This disruption places enormous strain on the liver and kidneys, increasing the risk of:
- Liver failure
- Hormonal imbalances
- Sleep disturbances
- Accelerated chronic disease
Endocrine and Reproductive Toxicity. Glyphosate mimics and blocks hormonal signals. Studies have shown:
- Fertility issues in male and female animals
- Birth defects and miscarriage
- Disrupted thyroid function
- Early onset of reproductive disorders in younger aminals
- Thyroid imbalances
- Adrenal dysfunction
It is disturbing that standard veterinary labs often report “normal ranges” of Glyphosate in the blood when in reality, there are no “normal” ranges, any detection is abnormal and should be addressed.
- Contaminated pet food: Many common pet food ingredients, especially when conventionally grown are frequently contaminated with glyphosate. Ingredients such as beets and beet pulp, corn, soy, wheat and wheat gluten, barley, oats, canola oil, and sometimes rice often carry residues of glyphosate due to its use as a weed killer and pre-harvest desiccant. Non-organic crops are particularly at risk because glyphosate use is permitted in conventional farming (but prohibited in organic production).
- Pesticide-treated lawns and sidewalks. Many homeowner associations use commercial companies for lawn maintenance that rely on products like Roundup to control weeds. Uneducated homeowners also contribute to the toxic burden by spraying their lawns.
- Water and soil runoff – One major and often overlooked way our pets are exposed to harmful herbicides like glyphosate is through water and soil runoff. When chemicals are sprayed on lawns, parks, and golf courses for weed control, they don’t just stay on the grass. Rain, sprinklers and irrigation systems wash these substances into nearby soil, puddles, and drainage systems.
- Pets ingest glyphosate when grooming and licking their wet paws after outdoor exposure.
- Rain water contaminated with glyphosate can be absorbed through the skin.
- Drinking from puddles.
Why This Matters The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as a “probable human carcinogen” (Group 2A). Although Bayer, the current manufacturer, has replaced glyphosate with other herbicides, many substitutes also pose health and environmental risks.
Glyphosate and herbicides like Liberty aren’t just a pet issue, they’re a planetary one. The science is irrefutable. It’s time to demand safer agricultural and municipal practices, and safer ingredients in pet food.
The key to vitality is reducing as much toxic exposure as possible while supporting the body’s natural ability to adapt and regenerate.
Create An Actionable Plan:
- Feed a Glyphosate-Free, Organic, Species-Appropriate Diet. Choosing pet food made from organic or verified glyphosate-free ingredients is the single most effective way to reduce your pet’s glyphosate exposure. Select species-appropriate diets that prioritize whole, natural ingredients without fillers like beet pulp, corn, soy, wheat, or other commonly contaminated crops. Organic pet foods prohibit glyphosate use, helping protect your pet’s gut health and overall wellness.
- Provide Highly Filtered, Structured Water. Glyphosate has contaminated water supplies and rainwater. It is imperative to verify the filtration equipment being considered is able to filter heavy metals, Glyphosate and microplastics to 1 micron. Structured water can promote better cellular function and potentially help mitigate toxin effects by improving nutrient delivery and waste removal at the cellular level. Utilizing Filtered Structured Molecular Hydrogen – helps neutralize harmful free radicals, reduce inflammation, and boost mitochondrial energy for vibrant health. It supports cellular repair, enhances detoxification, and promotes resilience against everyday toxins and stressors. – Click Here for more!
- Support And Heal The Gut Barrier. ION Gut repairs the actin filaments and supports Redox Signaling. Licorice root repairs the mucus lining of the gut. Consult Dr. Siegel for the best protocols and implementation strategies. Digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes are the catalysts — helping to break down food into nutrients the body can absorb and utilize. Without them, even the healthiest diet can result in undigested food fermenting in the gut, leading to gas, inflammation, and dysbiosis. Research supports the use of digestive enzymes to improve nutrient absorption, reduce gastrointestinal symptoms, and support pets with compromised digestion or chronic inflammation (Martinez et al., 2017; Wolfe & Mohr, 2015).
- Supplement with prebiotics and probiotics. Prebiotics are the fuel — non-digestible fibers that feed beneficial bacteria. Fermented foods provide a diverse community of living microbes that help your pet’s microbiome adapt and thrive, while many commercial probiotic preparations are limited in strains and lack that natural synergy. Probiotics are the builders, the beneficial microbes that strengthen immune function, improve digestion, and support the vital gut-brain connection. The greater the diversity, the stronger the foundation for lifelong health.
- Enhance Detoxification. Detoxification is not just about removing harmful substances, it’s about restoring balance to the body so healing can occur. Supporting natural detox pathways helps reduce the toxic burden and improves energy, resilience, and overall health. Click Here for More!
